Hyoho Niten Ichi Ryu (The Two Heavens as One School) kenjutsu was founded by the legendary Japanese swordsman, Miyamoto Musashi, who was born in 1587. Musashi was one of the greatest sword masters in Japanese history, whose book “Gorin No Sho” (Book of Five Rings) is well known not only in Japan but also in the West. The most distinctive feature of Hyoho Niten Ichi Ryu is its concurrent use of two swords – long and short.
Niten Ichi ryu techniques are economical, without flashy or exaggerated movements. Targeting is precise, and the distance and timing is tight and without wasted movement.
Niten Ichi ryu consists of the following sets of techniques:
-
Itto seiho (single sword)
-
Kodachi seiho (short sword)
-
Nito seiho (two swords)
-
Bojutsu (staff techniques)
-
Juttejutsu (a forked iron truncheon that can be used for trapping a blade)
-
Jujutsu (unarmed combat)
Like the practice of modern budo, we study HNIR kenjutsu to improve ourselves. Our practice is done earnestly, with the understanding that while it is impossible to reinvent him, every time we practice we get one step closer to Musashi.
Our headmaster is Iwami Toshio Harukatsu, the 11th Soke. The school headquarters is located in Kokura, Kitakyushu, in Japan. The group practicing in Leuven has been authorised by Iwami Soke in 2008.
